3. Oscars 2024

The Meme

The Academy Awards were this past Sunday, and considering the ratings for the youngest age demo were only a few million, that means most people who trade in memes didn't watch. But you wouldn't know that from being on X over the past few days, because the abundance of tremendous content and Oscars memes. If only they streamed them on a service people actually use, like Netflix or TikTok, instead of cable television.

Anyways, the memes here are directly related to the winners and memorable moments — particularly Emma Stone not wanting to win Best Actress over Lily Gladstone and Al Pacino reading the Best Picture envelope like the weirdo he has become in his old age. Maybe this and football are the only monoculture we as a society still have to bond over and to make fun of things with. Celebrities only have so many avenues to build their brands, and being made fun of at the Oscars is still one of them!

2. TikTok ban

The Meme

The US House of Representatives passed a bill that would effectively be a ban on TikTok this week, which has resulted in a whole lot of pushback from regular people,both on and off the video platform.

The legislators present it as a move for consumer data protection, but haven't done much to deal with the snooping of American-owned social media platforms like Facebook. Frankly, TikTok is more popular with the American public than any politician is, so they can't be shocked when Gen Z doesn't show up to vote in November.

1. The Kate Middleton saga

The Memes

The internet's favorite conspiracy theory at the moment concerns British royal Kate Middleton, whom online sleuths suspect is at the center of some sinister goings-on at Kensington Palace. There are a lot of twists and turns in the bizarre "Where's Kate?" saga (explained here), but the latest saw the Princess of Wales share a family photo that internet users and major news agencies soon realized had been "manipulated" in several ways.

This news, and Kate's subsequent statement taking responsibility for the doctored photo, have only fueled Kate Middleton truthers online — and sparked even more memes.
