The Kate Middleton 'Fake' Photo Drama Just Got Even Weirder
The Princess of Wales has issued a statement after a family photo shared to her X account was accused of being "manipulated."

In late February, the internet was awash with speculation regarding the whereabouts of British royal Kate Middleton. People were concerned that the Princess of Wales, who had undergone surgery in January, hadn't been seen publicly in weeks — and X became a hotbed of conspiracy theories and memes about what might have happened to her.

The public's frenzied reaction prompted Kensington Palace to issue a statement assuring people that Kate is doing fine, and photographers captured Kate Middleton in a car on her first known public outing since the operation on March 4.

The pictures of Kate out and about did little to abate conspiracy theories, though — for many, the grainy photos simply disguised a Kate impersonator and served as further evidence that something sinister is afoot.



Now, in the latest and weirdest twist so far, the royal has admitted to editing a photo she recently shared of herself and her children on social media.

On March 10, which is Mother's Day in the UK, the Prince and Princess of Wales shared a picture of Kate and their kids to their X account. At first glance, it's a nice, normal family photo — but super sleuths and news agencies alike soon noticed that something wasn't quite right.

Among the details pointed out online were daughter Charlotte's blurred sleeve and a missing wedding ring on Kate's hand.



At the time of writing, five major news agencies — including AFP, Reuters and Associated Press — have pulled the photo over concerns that it has been "manipulated."

In response to the controversy, Kate herself posted a statement to social media on March 11, in which she took responsibility for editing the now-recalled family photo.

"Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing," she wrote. "I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused."

This additional wrinkle in an already bonkers story, along with the royal's bizarre claim that she "occasionally experiments with editing," only resulted in more memes and speculation online.
