Depending on where you live, a graduate degree can significantly increase the salary you earn β but which degrees are growing and declining across the US?
Using National Center for Education Statistics data on the number of undergraduate degrees awarded between the 2010-2011 and 2020-2021 academic years, Kashish Rastogi visualized which fields of study are gaining and losing popularity among American students. Those with fewer than 30,000 graduates were not included.
Key Findings:
-
Business remains the most popular field of study for undergrads, with 391,000 bachelor's degrees awarded in the 2020-2021 academic year β an increase of seven percent from since 2010-2011.
-
Degrees related to computer and information sciences have grown by 144 percent over the last decade, with 105,000 graduates in 2020-2021.
-
More students are seeking a career in the health profession, which saw an 87 percent increase in completed college degrees. The field accounts for a considerable 13 percent of 2020-2021's total graduating class.
-
The number of graduates with a liberal arts degree has fallen by 10 percent since 2010-2011, while completed education degrees have dipped 14 percent.
