If you saw the horror-themed study we shared just recently, you'll know that more horror films have been filmed in Pittsburgh than any other city — and it turns out, the city's home state of Pennsylvania is where the most scary movie deaths have taken place, too.

To find out which parts of the country have the highest horror movie kill counts, CableTV looked at every US-based flick on Rotten Tomatoes’ 200 Best Horror Movies of All Time list, and added up the number of murders in each state using Bodycounters.com and Fandom's List of Deaths Wiki. Only deaths that were shown on-screen were analyzed, and those involving non-human characters were included, too.

Key Findings:

  • Pennsylvania has by far the most horror movie murders, with 615 deaths counted across just six films.

  • The state that has set the scene for the second-highest number of horror killings in the US is New York (254 deaths, seven movies), followed by California (163 deaths, 17 movies).

  • California is home to the most top-rated horror films of any US state, including "Nightmare On Elm Street", "Scream" and "The Lost Boys."

  • The horror flicks with the highest kill counts overall are "Brightburn" (74 kills, set in Kansas); "Dawn of the Dead" (140 kills, set in Milwaukee); and "The First Purge" (130 kills, set in New York).
