Americans In These 18 States Are Struggling To Make Their Rent And Mortgage Payments
With soaring rent and high home prices across the US, research shows that millions of Americans are struggling to make their rent and mortgage payments. Nearly half of America's homeowners and renters say they have struggled to afford housing costs, according to a Redfin survey, while another survey found that six out of 10 homeowners have had hiccups making a mortgage payment on time.
According to the Census Bureau's 2024 Q1 Household Pulse Survey, 6.3 percent of American adults reported falling behind on either rent or mortgage payment, on average. The below graphic by Overflow Data, which maps the survey's statewide findings, paints a bleak picture of where people are most likely to be behind on their payments.
Adults in 17 states and the District of Columbia are doing worse than the national average, with the highest percentage of populations behind found in New York (9.7 percent), District of Columbia (8.8), Louisiana (8.7), Maryland (8.5) and Mississippi (8.2).
While the majority of states (33) were ranked below the national average, Montana (3.7 percent), New Hampshire (4.2), Idaho (4.4) and Kansas (4.4) had some of the lowest shares of residents behind on payments.
