America's total homeless population grew by more than 12 percent from 2022 to 2023, climbing to the highest point the country has seen since at least 2007.

Homelessness doesn't look the same everywhere in the US, though. Using government data for 2023, USAFacts mapped the homeless population per 10,000 people in every state, as well as the homeless population across the country's 50 most populous cities.

The largest homeless populations were found in California, Oregon, New York and Vermont, where there were between 45 and 55 homeless people for every 10,000 residents.

Looking at actual numbers, more than half of all people experiencing homelessness in the US belonged to just four states: California (28 percent or 181,399 people), New York (16 percent or 103,200 people), Florida (five percent or 30,756 people) and Washington (four percent or 28,036 people).

When it comes to cities, New York City (88,025), Los Angeles (71,320) and Seattle (14,149) had the biggest homeless populations overall.
