With childcare costs having soared a whopping 220 percent in the US since 1990, it's now more expensive than ever to raise a child — but just how much are Americans really struggling with the cost of being a parent?

To understand the cost of parenting crisis in the US, CouponBirds surveyed almost 1,300 parents about how they are coping financially, whether it's trickier to support their kids in 2024 and the sacrifices they've had to make — or are prepared to — to be able to afford the things their children need.

More than 80 percent of parents said they are working more hours and taking extra jobs to make ends meet, while nearly two-thirds reported skipping meals due to financial strain.

Over half of the American adults surveyed spend at least a quarter of their income on childcare, and 60 percent are struggling to afford school supplies.

The rising cost of living has prompted more than 70 percent of parents to move in with someone else, or at least consider it — and four in ten of them are struggling to make rent or a mortgage payment due to the cost of childcare.
