University of Minnesota researchers assembled synthetic cells from non-living chemicals: lipid membranes, ~90 kb synthetic genomes, enzymes, and ribosomes. SpudCells grow via feeder vesicle fusion, replicate DNA, divide through membrane buckling, and demonstrate selection as variants outcompete others.
