Trump plans Tuesday document to rename AI as “superintelligence”

President Trump said Tuesday that he planned to sign a document later in the day to officially rename artificial intelligence as “superintelligence,” extending a recent push to change how the technology is described in government language.

Speaking after a White House luncheon with top technology executives, Trump said the signing would happen “today at about 5 o’clock” and described the move as an official renaming of AI, The Hill reported.

Trump also said future U.S. documents would use the new term, according to The Hill’s account of his remarks. The outlet reported that he has been pressing the rebrand in recent weeks and floated several possible names before settling on “superintelligence.”

The Hill noted that “superintelligence” already has an established meaning in AI, referring to systems that go beyond human intelligence.

Trump has framed the change as a response to the word “artificial.” In remarks cited by The Hill from last week, he argued that the term makes intelligence sound fake. The outlet also said the renaming push has unfolded as researchers warn that AI could threaten humanity, some tech leaders call for a slowdown in development, and Trump argues the U.S. should keep moving ahead to maintain its lead over China on AI.
