You Probably Shouldn't Spent $900 On A Walkman In 2023

Unless you're feeling wildly nostalgic and have a bunch of money to burn, Sony's latest attempt to revive the Walkman brand isn't worth it. Just listen on your smartphone.

Also it's 500 dollars for the lower cost entry, truly lazy af journalism

Truly a poor review there was a firmware update that addressed issues.

While I agree that 900 dollars is a stupid amount of money to spend on audio for the average person, the new walkman range (walkman?) aren't intended for normal listening. While they try to market it as a new walkman, it's really more of a portable FLAC player for hi-fi audio, this is for audiophiles. That being said I don't think most audiophiles will splurge for this, since tidal does offer a hi-fi plan.

Audiophiles will absolutely splurge on these, because if you are buying high-resolution audio files from Tidal then you need hardware capable of playing them to hear what you're paying for. Otherwise it's like looking at the Mona Lisa from 30 feet away - it's great, you'll enjoy the view, but you won't see da Vinci's brush stokes. The name "Walkman" dates back to Sony's handheld cassette players, first sold in 1979, which were world-shakingly popular. The digital Walkman range of music devices has been in production for decades now, and these aren't the most expensive items they've offered. With appreciation for these two guys, it's Sony: they know exactly who their customers are and they'll be just fine.
