What's better than a beautiful, top-floor apartment? One with a cottage on the rooftop, of course.

In Manhattan's East Village, sitting against the city skyline, there's a hidden gem worth $9,750,000. Built in 1910, 72 East 1st Street is no ordinary home: it's a two-floor penthouse with a rooftop cottage.

Before we get to the rooftop, though, let's take a moment to admire the main living space, where sunlight pours into a dreamy farmhouse kitchen, a double-height living room and four spacious bedrooms.

Drawing inspiration from English country homes, the apartment is adorned with elegant touches throughout — like a grand staircase, a spectacular chandelier, a marble fireplace and parquet floor tiles salvaged from a London theater.

Now, to the rooftop. Described in the listing as a "Cape Cod-style shingled cottage," the quaint little room could serve as anything from a guest suite to a home office — or, as I think it'd be best used, an art studio.

And to top it all off, the terrace outside has shrubbery, an apple tree and a lounging area for sunny mornings and lazy days. If there's a way this home could be any nicer, I can't think of it.
