Paid leave and public holiday laws vary wildly across the globe โ€” some countries' employees enjoy many paid days away from work, while others are entitled to very, very little.

To find out which countries are most generous (or most stingy) when it comes to paid time off, Resume.io compared 197 countries on their annual statutory paid leave and paid public holidays laws, and ranked them based on the combined number of paid days off per year.

Key Findings:

  • Iran is the best country in the world for paid time off, with 27 paid public holidays and the highest number of paid vacation days overall (53).
  • With zero statutory days, the US is the worst country when it comes to paid leave (in joint last place with the Pacific island countries of Nauru, Micronesia, and Kiribati). The States are also home to the second-lowest number of paid vacation days in the world, at just 10.

This is a BS report. I live in the US and when I left the last company I worked for I had 28 paid vacation days. My grand daughter just started a new job an has 21 paid vacation days.

You missed some key points in the description.

Thats not statutory days off. The article is referring to required days off by law and the USA doesn't require any. Also, when I was younger I worked for a job that didn't provide any days off (again its completely up to the employer and not required) as it is in other countries

China is more than 16. I don't know how this is calculated, I am a factory owner in China myself and my employees get about 20-25 days of paid vacation per year. Most of them are national statutory holidays, and some are company benefits.

Its only referring to statutory days

Finland haa 30 paid leave days, not 20.
    Nice idea, bad execution.

Finding this a bit odd. How are they counting paid holidays? I live in France, for example, but have lived and worked in other European countries. None of these numbers march the reality. For example, here in France, I work in the public sector and get 41 or so paid days, but private sector workers get 25. Where did they get the 36 from ?

Not sure, but of the 11 national holidays in France, only one is REQUIRED as a paid day off, which has to be true to be counted as a statutory paid leave day. The other statutory days are calculated based on the number of days you work, so it makes sense the number will vary depending on your work circumstances, meaning only a few people will recognize the number as "right."

Like most things in the US the baseline is zero and everything else depends on market conditions and competition. Actually in the US, like most professionals working at large companies,I receive more like 40 days.

I have unlimited time off, perks of my job.

Thats also a sneaky way for employers to not have to pay out vacation if they leave the company since there is no balance to pay out. Not a bad thing if you dont ever plan to leave but my last job i was paid out over $3000 when i left for unused vacation time

Seems like your methodology is a little flawed, as for Australia we have 20 paid leave days from work, 7 national holidays but then each state has between 5 and 7 additional public holidays for a total of 32-34 days.

Keep in mind that in most companies, it's just a 1 or 1.5 day weekend in Iran.

I gotta move out of the US.
