Since the pandemic first shut us all in our homes back in 2020, working remotely has become more and more prevalent. According to SmartAsset, though, some cities are better to work from home in than others.

Analyzing 100 of the largest US cities — on factors such as work from home prevalence, housing costs and income taxes — SmartAsset uncovered which ones accommodates the work-from-home lifestyle best.

Key Findings:

  • Six of the study's top 10 cities are in North Carolina and Arizona.

  • In 13 of the cities analyzed, more than a third of workers surveyed worked from home.

  • Though less than one in five people work from home nationally, nearly half of the individuals (48.9 percent) in Fremont, California, do, while WFH-ers make up 48.8 percent and 48.3 percent of the workforce in Arlington, Virginia, and Washington, DC, respectively.

  • Of the 10 worst cities for working from home, eight are in California. In all eight of the Golden State cities, the income tax rate for someone earning $75,000 is nearly 25 percent while median monthly housing costs are more than $1,200.
