The Lede

Currently, the US Senate has three independent members. If the political situation doesn't change, we could be getting another as "independent minded" Lisa Murkowski tells CNN that she leaves open the possibility that she could leave the GOP over Trump's nomination.

Key Details

  • Speaking on the record, Sen. Murkowski said "I certainly can’t get behind Donald Trump" — an unsurprising take considering that she was one of the few Republican Senators to vote in favor of convicting him during his impeachment.
  • While she doesn't come out and say that she intends to bolt, she leaves the door open much more than a crack: "I am navigating my way through some very interesting political times. Let’s just leave it at that."
  • All current independent Senators caucus with Democrats.
