Mysterious Stone in US Backyard Turned Out to Be an Archaeological Treasure
A couple in New Orleans found a marble slab in their backyard that turned out to be a 2,000-year-old Roman funerary tablet. The Latin inscription on the stone commemorated a Roman soldier named Sextus Congenius Verus. The tablet was originally part of the collection of the National Archaeological Museum of Civitavecchia, Italy, but was lost during World War II. The tablet was repatriated to the museum after its discovery.
