With Mother's Day approaching, we wanted to honor as many fictional moms as we could.

There have been a lot of memorable characters — from evildoers and heroes to action stars and those with tragic stories — and we can't help but highlight some of the best of those here.

These are our superlative awards for the best, worst and most unique mothers to ever grace the silver screen, and if we forgot any please let us know in the comments who we missed.

Scariest mom: The monster from 'Barbarian'

Not quite human, but 100 percent mother, this nude creature stands seven-feet-tall and forces puny humans in the Detroit metro area to be breastfed. A special shout-out to Justin Long for playing along.

Runners-up: Faye Dunaway as Joan Crawford ("Mommie Dearest"), Anne Ramsey as Mama Fratelli ("The Goonies").

Saddest mom: Laurie Metcalf as Marion McPherson in 'Lady Bird'

The daughter doesn't like her name, doesn't like living in Sacramento and doesn't like being in the car with her mother — but she's also hard to parent because she's a free spirit. Laurie Metcalf should have won an Oscar for this performance. She's so good, and so is this movie.

Runners-up: Da'Vine Joy Randolph as Mary Lamb ("The Holdovers"), Mo'Nique as Mary Lee Johnston ("Precious").

Mom who's most likely to cause some damage: Betsy Palmer as Pamela Voorhees

In Pamela Voorhees's case, it's getting revenge on those damn horny teenagers for the death of her son Jason. Good for you Pamela! You teach those kids what's up.

Runners-up: Octavia Spencer in ("Ma"), Emily Blunt in ("A Quiet Place").

Mom most willing to throw their kid under the bus: Mary Kane from 'Citizen Kane'

Why couldn't this woman hang out with her son, an innocent child who just wanted to play in the snow with his sled Rosebud? No, instead it's all about money, gold, a mining deed and trust funds.

Runners-up: Mrs. Teevee ("Willy Wonka"), Rose's mom Ruth ("Titanic").

The Best mother of a fictional child: Elizabeth Taylor as Martha in 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?'

Elizabeth Taylor, arguably the most famous actress of the 20th century, won her second Academy Award for playing Martha in the film adaptation of the famous Edward Albee play. It's a devastating performance, a powerful character and an all-time play/movie from Mike Nichols. The whole movie is embedded above, watch it before YouTube takes it down!

Runners-up: Monica Swinton ("A.I.").

Best Lady Macbeth impression: Angela Lansbury from 'The Manchurian Candidate'

Angela Lansbury is a tour-de-force in this movie, which was so ahead of its time that it basically a political assassination. It's eerie to watch it now, an incredibly mesmerizing psychological neo-noir about political power that also stars Frank Sinatra, Janet Leigh and Henry Silva.

Runners-up: Allison Janney as Tonya Harding's mom LaVona ("I, Tonya").

Mom we feel the worst for: Meryl Streep as Sophie in 'Sophie's Choice'

We're not sure how any one could live through the Holocaust and then have to choose between picking which of her two children live, and which one doesn't. There are no words to describe what that would be like, and Meryl Streep deservedly won that Oscar, because, man this is such a messed up story. Gigantic bummer, I'm getting distraught just thinking about it.

Runners-up: Michelle Williams as Mitzi Fabelman ("The Fablemans"), Scarlett Johansson as Rosie Betzler ("JoJo Rabbit"), Brie Larson as Joy Newsome ("Room").

Mom most likely to kick your ass: Sarah Connor

"Terminator 2: Judgment Day" is the greatest action movie ever made, and Sarah Connor is the coolest woman to ever help save the world. Linda Hamilton deserves so much better than whatever Hollywood put her through.

Runners-up: Melissa Leo ("The Fighter"), Michelle Yeoh ("Everything Everywhere All At Once").

Mom the internet is thirstiest for: Mrs. Incredible

You perverts, leave her and Holly Hunter alone.

Runners-up: Aunt Cass ("Big Hero 6").

Best anthropomorphic mom: Duchess from 'The Aristocats'

Not many animals in animated movies that aren't immediately murdered to generate tears in the audience. We're looking at you "Bambi." But when movies aren't interested in being too emotionally manipulative, sometimes you get to see a cool mom like Duchess.

Runners-up: Perdita ("101 Dalmatians").

Most popular Halloween outfit for moms: Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley in 'Aliens'

Undoubtedly the most popular characters who happen to be moms in movies.

Runners-up: Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia (Star Wars), Elliot Page ("Juno"), Amy Poehler ("Mean Girls").

The Anti-MILF award: Lea Thompson as Lorraine Baines McFly in 'Back to the Future'

No one — fictional or otherwise — should get romantically (or quantumly) entangled with their mother. Unless you're Oedipus and it's destined. But still, no, that's messed up.

Runners-up: Norman Bates dressing up as his own mother in "Psycho," the alien queen from "Aliens."
