Reviews For 'Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire' Are Bad. Here Are Some Of The Worst Things Critics Have Said
Somehow, this might end up being the worst movie in the franchise, and that's saying something because there is only one good "Ghostbusters" film.

"Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" releases on March 22, 2024, and according to critics, this is the most soulless, gutless corporate IP-milking cinema to grace our screens in years. Critics think "Frozen Empire" deserves to be the death knell for the cult '80s franchise.

An overwhelming amount of reviewers not only disliked this movie vehemently, but also had some truly terrible things to say about every aspect of the film, from its weak premise and constant nostalgia-bait callbacks, to the flimsy characters and terrible CGI.

The film stars Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts and Celeste O'Connor. If you want to venture out and see what this is like, let us know what you thought of the film and if the critics were wrong.

Here are some of the harshest critiques of "Frozen Empire":

  • "...artless, soulless, joyless concoction of corporate vapidity." — [Anthony O'Connor, FilmInk Australia]

  • "'Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire' doubles down, fully committing to its existence as a cynical nostalgia raid masquerading as a movie." — [Tara Bennett, Paste]

  • "It's officially time to stop calling the Ghostbusters. 'Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire' puts the franchise on very thin ice — and suggests that this may be the moment to gracefully retire this IP for good." — [David Fear, Rolling Stone]

  • "'Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire' is messy, visually unappealing, and worst of all, unfunny, and is further evidence that major studios too often rely on brand recognition to make them money rather than putting together a film worth audiences' time." — [Cody Dericks, Next Best Picture]

  • "Feels like it exists as a studio imperative first — 'Make a 'Ghostbusters' movie with the cast of the old movies and the cast of the new movie!' — and a compelling story a very distant second." — [Matt Singer, ScreenCrush]

  • "Overall, 'Frozen Empire' banks on the nostalgic fan-service a little too much. What is the point of creating a new legacy of heroes when everyone is still stuck in the past?" — [Laura Sirikul, The Nerds of Color]

  • "The first 'Ghostbusters' movie that feels obligatory, scattershot and devoid of any real soul." — [Dan Murrell]

  • "Creaky, cutesie and cluttered." — [Roger Moore, Movie Nation]

  • "It's so confused by its own lore, by its incessant callbacks to the past and by its uncertainty around how to address the present that it mostly unfolds as a series of loosely connected 'Ghostbusters-'themed sequences rather than an actual coherent movie." — [Kevin Maher, Times UK]

  • "There's too many characters, too many arcs, and not enough development. The main cast is underutilized, while the veteran Ghostbusters make glorified cameos that don't add to the story. This was a disappointing turn in the 'Ghostbusters' franchise." — [Kristen Maldonado, Pop Culture Planet]

  • "When the spark goes out and the humor doesn't garner laughs anymore, it's time to consider putting this one in the grave." — [Maggie Lovitt, Millennial Falcon Reviews]

  • "Although it is not a complete failure, there is something infuriating in the producers' obsession with continuing to squeeze out a franchise that clearly has run out of artistic juice." — [Diego Batlle, Otroscines]

  • "The movie has too many characters and too few new ideas, and it's more concerned with cramming mass appeal into the picture than telling a good story." — [Brian Eggert, Deep Focus Review]

  • "A lackluster, overproduced, and forgettable entry in the 'Ghostbusters' franchise." — [Avi Offer, NYC Movie Guru]

  • "I hate to say it, but bustin' just doesn't make me feel good anymore." — [Matt Donato, Daily Dead]

  • "A silly and confusing nostalgia-infused stew that suffers from ingredients well past their sell-by dates, 'Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire' is an erratic mess of plot and pacing, with too many layers and too many characters." — [Lynn Venhaus, PopLife STL]

Please don't lump 'bad CGI' in there with your other criticisms. You have no idea what you're talking about. The CG may well be poor in places, and there are many reasons for this - design by committee, budget constraints, crunch time, last minute changes. It's very unfair to throw all the artists and technical staff under a bus, for something that is very likely not their fault. Please try and get more mindful in future.

Can Hollywood please stop destroying franchises from our youth?
