The following list of movies are all free titles — with ads or ad-free if you pay for the premium YouTube Red. Presumably, most of these will rotate, although a few have stayed around for a while, like several of the films previously listed in roundups.

A theme kept popping up when scanning the free movies on offer this month: there's a lot of good, creepy titles on hand for the start of October! So if you're into morose comedies, psychological thrillers or pure horror, then consider watching these entries and save yourself some money.

Trailers have been linked for films that don't allow full embeds.

'Donnie Darko' (2001)

Every weirdo's favorite movie in high school, "Donnie Darko" is an emo masterpiece. It's dark and moody, has an evil bunny rabbit, Donnie dies (possibly) and no one knows what's going on. A young Jake Gyllenhaal (along with his sister Maggie) sleepwalks through some twisted imagery — and, if you want, there's a director's cut from Richard Kelly on YouTube as well.

'Pi' (1998)

Darren Aronofsky is the king of "not quite a horror film" movies, mostly working in the realm of indie-driven psychological thrillers with a concept at their heart. And nothing exemplifies the bananas career path he's taken more than his debut, "Pi." What is "Pi" about? A mathematician. No really, anything more than that and you'd just be guessing. It's a fun one to interpret, because it's so avant-garde and wacky, but this put Aronofsky on the map for a reason.

'Bernie' (2011)

This is a weird Richard Linklater black comedy crime film that's based on a real life story. It's about a mortician played by Jack Black in a creepy little mustache, a murder and Matthew McConaughey wearing a big cowboy hat. It might not be the scariest movie on this list, but it's still messed up enough to make you think "what if this happened to me?"

'In The Mouth Of Madness' (1995)

This has been on a few "Free YouTube Movies" lists over the past year or so, partially because it keeps showing up for free on YouTube, but mostly because it's a criminally underrated horror film from John Carpenter — the man behind many of your dad's favorite movies. This has the main guy from "Jurassic Park," who gets lost in a Stephen King novel — that's all you need to know before diving in.

'Sunshine' (2007)

This is an exceptional Danny Boyle sci-fi thriller that devolves into a slasher film in the last act. But for most of it, it's a very well-thought-out movie set on a spaceship with a terrific cast. A small crew (with hotties Chris Evans and Cillian Murphy) has to reignite the sun or else humanity will die. But the ship that tried to do it before them is found, and no one knows why the first attempt couldn't complete the mission.

'Memento' (2001)

While maybe the least directly horror-adjacent movie on the list, it also might be the very best. The reasoning behind putting this film on here is that it's a psychological thriller, but a moody somber piece, where a man is trapped inside of his own head and thrown into a noir mystery that he himself created. Except he can't remember any of it because he has a brain injury that affects short term memory. This is a brilliant film by Chris Nolan, and a must watch.
