Using MIT's Living Wage Calculator, CNBC's Fran Velasquez mapped out which regions had the highest and lowest minimum income requirement needed to cover living costs — like food, health care, housing, transportation, internet costs and clothing.

Key Details

  • The District of Columbia came out on top as with the highest minimum income requirement to live comfortably with $41,850. Hawaii was second with a required minimum income of $40,412.
  • At the other end, Arkansas required the lowest amount to cover expenses with a $27,652 minimum income.
