When was the last time your living space got the full attention it deserved? For many of us, it's been an exceedingly long time. Spending big on renovations can be particularly scary, so it's nice to see some clear, reasonable breakdowns from someone who recently spent six figures on home improvement.

Redditor u/DavidAg02 went through and replaced their HVAC, windows and roof. Some of the advice revolves being an informed client, but other parts can be as simple as some cold drinks for folks doing the actual labor.

That stock photo is wild. Using a 5 pound hammer on a screw into a 1/4 inch piece of plywood ON YOUR KNEE!

Big Window Tip: Fixed windows are significantly less than operable, so ask yourself if every window needs to be operable, or if you’d be fine with having some fixed windows instead.

Some window companies bank on being well known, but there are great deals to be had on high quality (sometimes better quality) double hung, or better yet, turn and tilt windows.

If pricing European windows, remember that shipping is a big cost- if you have a full container worth of windows, the price per window actually comes down (vs shipping a half-loaded container).

maybe start off by not hammering in a screw
