MAKE, MAKE AGAIN

Five Video Game Remakes That Are Better Than The Originals

Five Video Game Remakes That Are Better Than The Originals
Sometimes, newer is simply better across the board.

Things move fast in the world of video games, so a title that's only a decade old can sometimes feel practically ancient. As such, remakes are a common practice in the industry. Some releases are under-resourced cash-grabs, sure, but today I want to celebrate some examples where the remake outshines the original.

Before you get your comments written up, I want to announce my adoration of video game preservation. The dedicated folks at the Video Game History Foundation ensure that the legacy of classic games remain in tact for generations to come. I might recommend a remake for new players, but it's culturally important that we keep the original works safe and playable. With all that out of the way, let's press start to begin.

'Dead Space' (2023)

This reworking of the 2008 horror game "Dead Space" is easily one of the best releases of the year. The protagonist has a voice now, the plot has been smartly tweaked and the soundscape is more terrifying than ever. Unless you're looking to satiate some great recession-era nostalgia, this is the version to play for sure.

'The Last of Us Part I' (2022)

With the exception of the missing multiplayer mode, this is clearly the best of the many versions of "The Last of Us." Produced after "Part II," and serving as Naughty Dog's first proper outing on the PS5, this loving remake of Joel and Ellie's story eclipses the PS3 original and the PS4 remaster with highly-detailed acting performances and much more competent AI in combat scenarios.

'Mafia: Definitive Edition' (2020)

The first "Mafia" game released in 2002 β€” only a year after "Grand Theft Auto III" popularized the open-world sandbox style. Needless to say, going back to this 20-year-old game requires more than a little patience to enjoy. Thankfully, Hangar 13's remake brings the controls and visuals up to modern standards. Just be sure to show the Don some respect.

'Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139...' (2021)

This iteration of "Nier" made my GOTY list back in 2021, and I'll take any opportunity to sing its praises. Not only is this the first time western countries have gotten to enjoy the original protagonist (instead of the daddyfied version from 2010), but the much-improved combat and additional story content makes this an all-time great.

If you've only ever played the much more popular sequel "Nier: Automata," here is your sign to try out the original in its best possible form.

'Yakuza Kiwami' (2016)

"Yakuza" first hit the PS2 in 2006 with a handful of terrible localization decisions β€” souring Sega on releasing these games in the west for years. Thankfully, the last decade has been a renaissance for the "Yakuza" (AKA "Like A Dragon") series across the globe. This full remake of the original game shares much of the tech and (sometimes wacky) design goals of the beloved "Yakuza 0" prequel, so it's easy to pick up and play regardless of where you live.
