    Of course, no one can "force" you to spend money. When you found out he'd ordered an Uber, you could have told them you'll meet them there and start walking.

      Being frugal by nature I'm one hundred percent on his side. Imagine if he did what you suggested. They would be pissed that he made them spend ten bucks extra and he'd be the villain. Back in the day, when I was a barfly, I used to hate the whole shouting rounds rigmarole. An utterly pointless way for each participant to end up doing more work and spending more money ( Haha, drunk Joey spilt the drinks tray)
