An anaerobic species found in periodontal disease, fusobacterial nucleatum is not common in healthy colons.

Before the study, it was believed that fusobacteria could not survive stomach acid. However, this has since been disproved as the "more aggressive" tumors were found to contain it. The bacteria has also been linked to premature births.
