People who are worth millions or billions of dollars are generally considered to be rich — but is it possible to put an exact figure on what makes someone wealthy?

Charles Schwab's 2023 Modern Wealth Survey asked 1,000 people across 12 major US cities what net worth it takes to be considered wealthy in America.

Key Findings:

• Overall, those surveyed think a net worth of at least $2.2 million is required to be wealthy in the US.

• On the city level, respondents in San Francisco think it takes the most money to be wealthy, at $4.7 million. On the other hand, they believe being financially comfortable requires a net worth of $1.7 million.

• The city reporting the lowest requirement for wealth overall is Houston, where respondents think it takes a net worth of $2.1 million. People in Houston also suggested the lowest net worth required to be financially comfortable: $606,000.
