Whether you started playing in the arcade or on a hand-me-down smartphone, video games have become an enormous part of modern society. And as new platforms have risen to prominence over time, the revenue that the industry earns has ballooned in recent years.

Visual Capitalist used data from intelligence firm Pelham Smithers to chart out the ebbs and flows of how many billions of dollars gaming companies have pulled in every single year since 1970.

Key Findings:

  • Arcades peaked in 1982 with $27 billion in revenue, but suffered a massive downturn in the following years. In 2022, they account for just 1.1 percent of industry revenue.

  • PC gaming saw its biggest year ever in 2022 with a whopping $45 billion β€” making up nearly a quarter of the industry's revenue.

  • Console peaked at $33 billion in both 2018 and 2021, and they made up about 17 percent share of the market in 2022.

  • Mobile gaming had its best year in 2021 as well with $105 billion in total. In 2022, it makes up over 55 percent of the industry β€” more than consoles and PC combined.
