US States Most Impacted By Natural Disasters, Mapped

Hurricane Ian, which is estimated to have caused $57 billion-worth of damage to Florida and South Carolina, is the latest natural disaster to cause widespread devastation in the US.

To find out which states across America are most prone to these events, WalletHub compared all 50 on the number of climate disasters (causing at least $1 billion in damage since 1980) and the loss amount per capita of those disasters.


Top Three Most Impacted States

  1. First place goes to Mississippi, which has suffered the seventh-highest number of natural disasters resulting in more than $1 billion in damage, and the biggest loss amount among all states.

  2. In second is Louisiana. This state ranks joint first with Mississippi when it comes to loss amount from disasters, and ranks 11th for the number of events causing more than $1 billion-worth of damage.

  3. Texas is the third-worst impacted state with the highest number of natural disasters causing $1 billion-plus in damage overall. It also ranks eighth-worst for amount of money lost to damage from a natural disaster.
