Fixing your car isn't cheap. In fact, in some places, it's more expensive than ever. Tire balancing, AC recharging, water pump and battery replacements, brake pad or spark plug replacements and mile service β€” the list goes on and on.

So if you're sick and tired of paying extra, consider driving to a bordering state to get a discount. Seriously. NetCredit mapped out how each state's car repair services stack up against each other. Here's what they found.


Key Findings

  • The state that pays the most for car repairs is California, where residents pay more than 12 percent higher than the national average.

  • On the other end of the spectrum, people in West Virginia paid the lowest premiums for car repairs, with the state's costs hovering around 18 percent less than the national average.

  • Among cities, San Francisco (21 percent higher than the national average) is the most expensive US city to get your car tuned up in. In fact, six of the top 10 cities are in California β€” San Jose, Los Angeles, Long Beach, San Diego and Oxnard.

  • Two Texas cities were the cheapest for repairs in the US: Amarillo and Laredo, Texas β€” both were more than 19 percent cheaper than the national average.
