Layoff Anxiety In America, Visualized

Layoff Anxiety In America, Visualized
You can't read the news (or read the news about the news) and not notice that layoffs are happening all the time. That doesn't align with the low unemployment numbers though, so what gives?

To gauge how mass layoffs affect people, Clarify Capital surveyed over a thousand American workers on what they would do in order to keep their jobs. They collected data on people's layoff fears, what they'd be willing to accept to avoid being fired and which companies they'd still like to work for, despite facing pay cuts as high as 10 percent. Here's what they found.

Key Findings:

  • Nearly a third of Americans fear they will be laid off this year, and the same number think their company is not being totally transparent about its financial challenges.

  • Nearly one in five would take a pay cut in order to keep their jobs. On average, respondents said they would accept a five percent cut, and one in 10 workers would go as high as 15 percent to avoid getting laid off.

  • The most common measure people would take to avoid losing their job is switching their role or switching teams, which about 40 percent of respondents said they would do. Behind those, the most common measure is returning to the office.

  • The company that people still aspire to work for the most is Google, despite the mass layoffs happening in the tech industry over the past few months. The drive is so high that respondents said they'd be willing to take an average pay cut of nearly ten percent just to stay.
