While the holidays can be fun and cozy, they can also be expensive β€” and depending on where you live, the amount of money you can get away with spending will differ vastly.

WalletHub analyzed the population characteristics β€” such as income, age and the ratio of savings to monthly expenses β€” of over 550 US cities to work out each location's custom holiday budget. They then ranked the cities to see where in the country can comfortably spend the largest sum of money this year.

Key Findings:

  • With an average of $3,956 to spend this Christmas, Palo Alto, California has the largest holiday budget in the study. Following closely behind are Bellevue, Washington and Frisco, Texas, whose maximum budgets are $3,576 and $3,546, respectively.

  • People in Lauderhill, Florida, have the smallest amount of money available to spend during the holiday season, with an average maximum budget of $495. The second-tightest budget is found in Newark, New Jersey, where residents will be spending $508 on average.
