Health care is pricey wherever in America you are, but cost isn't the only factor that matters, and not all health care across the country is created equal. To find out which US states are best and worst for health care, WalletHub compared all 50 and the District of Columbia on metrics across cost, accessibility and outcome.


Top Three Best States For Health Care

  1. Minnesota ranks first overall for health care, coming out on top for cost and placing seventh in the country for access.

  2. In second is Iowa, where health care costs are the second-best in the US, and outcomes rank sixth.

  3. The third spot goes to Rhode Island. Residents of this state enjoy the third-best access to health care overall, and the seventh-best costs.


Top Three Worst States For Health Care

  1. The lowest-ranking state for health care overall is West Virginia, with the second-worst outcomes in the country and the third-worst costs.

  2. Next is Mississippi, where health outcomes are the poorest in the US.

  3. Alaska takes third place, ranking worst of all the states for cost and 30th for outcomes.

    Wisconsin should be much higher, but I am sure that Milwaukee brings us down. We have Mayo, Gundersen, Bellin, Marshfield Clinic in the rest of the state.

      It's a little ironic that the dakotas are so high, but I think it has more to do with cost and access/for difficult things they just come to MN. I do wonder if the fact that MN and IA stand out so much hurts WI's rank.

        Nevermind, it's just cost. WI is one of the most expensive states for healthcare
