It's no surprise that urban areas are grubbier and more polluted than rural ones, but some cities in the US are considerably more gross than others. To find out which of the country's cities are the dirtiest, HouseFresh analyzed 12.3 million sanitation-related 311 complaints made over the past year, and ranked locations based on the number of reports made per 100,000 residents.

Key Findings:

  • According to the study, Baltimore is America's dirtiest city, with 47,295 santitation-related complaints made for every 100,000 people living there.

  • Milwaukee outshines other cities when it comes to cleanliness. With only 309 reports made per 100,000 residents, it's the cleanest city in the US.

  • The dirtiest zip code in the country is 21213 in Baltimore, where 89,391 sanitation-related complaints were made per 100,000 people in the 365 days prior to the study.

  • Houston's 77546 is the cleanest zip code overall. Just 19 complaints about cleanliness issues in the area were made for every 100,000 residents.

All I know is I went far down the list and actually found my zip code which is utter BS. Whenever we drive down my street I feel as though I'm in Paradise with the gorgeous gardens and beautiful trees. All Dog owners clean up after their pets and everyone feels the same way I do. We take care of our area.

This is a ranking of complaints and not on how dirty a city actually is.

The study is BS by the way. It says nothing about the cleanliness of a city. What it does is tell you how frustrated city residents are that their city is unresponsive. The high numbers reflect the fact that citizens are organizing into neighborhood groups and are issuing 311 to pressure the city into doing something about the homeless mess.

      Using not issuing.

Sacramento gets a lot of 311 calls because our city “leaders” believe in housing first to fix the homeless mess and they refuse to enforce their own ordinances. Not one single citation or arrest for campsites blocking the sidewalks since the law was passed. Zero. No citations for littering or drug possession or illegal camping on public property. None.
