2023 was a particularly bad year for workers of tech companies, with 262,000 employees laid off across the industry overall — and 2024 is continuing in much the same way, if January's cuts are anything to go by.

Sourcing figures from Layoffs.fyi, the team over at Visual Capitalist have charted some of the biggest layoffs the year has seen so far.

Editor's note: this data does not include the 1,000 jobs cut by eBay on January 23, 2024.

Key Findings:

  • An estimated 11,000 tech workers have been fired in 2024 already — but, as Visual Capitalist points out, this figure underestimates the actual number because it doesn't include general job cut announcements (or the aforementioned eBay layoffs).

  • The company that had arguably the worst start to 2024 was short-term rental startup Frontdesk, which cut its entire 200-person staff on the second day of the year.

  • Video game software developer Unity has seen the biggest layoff of the year so far, firing 1,800 people — that's roughly a quarter of their workforce.

  • Another company that has lost a significant share of its workforce is Amazon-owned streaming platform Twitch, who laid off 500 employees — around 35 percent of their total staff — in January.
