If your pet is your baby, leaving them behind while you go on vacation is probably unthinkable. Luckily, lots of Airbnbs are pet-friendly these days β€” but depending on where you're going, you could end up paying a pretty penny to bring your furry friend along.

To find out where it's most expensive to rent pet-friendly accommodation, MarketWatch compiled a list of America's 46 most-visited tourist destinations, then found the nightly prices of Airbnbs in each location when searching for two guests, one bedroom, one bed and one bathroom on "any week." To calculate the median nightly prices and premiums of pet-friendly Airbnbs across each destination, they conducted the same searches after adding a pet as a guest.

A total of 11,676 regular Airbnbs and 11,753 pet-friendly Airbnbs were analyzed overall, and the findings are accurate as of November 2023.

Key Findings:

  • The most expensive pet-friendly Airbnbs are found in Honolulu, Hawaii, where they cost a median of $511 per night β€” that's by far the highest price premium of any city analyzed (209 percent or $346).

  • Oklahoma City, on the other hand, is home to the cheapest pet-friendly Airbnbs of any tourist destination in the study. Renting accommodation for yourself and your pet will cost just $110 in the city, which equates to a premium of just 12 percent or $12.

  • Of the ten cities with the priciest premiums for pet-friendly rentals, seven belong to California β€” the most expensive of which is Monterey, with a nightly premium of $246.

  • The cheapest premiums for pet-friendly lodgings are found in Juneau, Alaska (-13 percent or -$25), and Puerto Rico (-3 percent or -$4).

This is a bit ridiculous because it is a months long process to bring a pet into Hawaii. Who would bring one in for a vacation? As a resident, there are places to rent to get away here that take dogs that are pretty cheap. Like camping. So this doesn't really make any sense.
