Analyzing data from the US Census Bureau’s Annual Business Survey, OnDeck has uncovered the states with the highest (and lowest) proportion of family- and spouse-owned businesses.


Key Findings:

  • South Dakota has the highest share of family businesses of all US states at 43 percent.
  • The state with the least family-run businesses is New York at 20.4 percent.
  • At 35.6 percent, Idaho is the US state with the highest proportion of spouse-owned companies.
