Japan's birthrate fell for the eighth straight year in 2023, with the number of babies born in the country hitting a record low of 758,631 โ that's a 5.1 percent drop from the previous year.
Officials have said the ongoing decline in births is at a "critical state" and is "the biggest crisis Japan faces." The country's population is predicted to fall by as much as 29.4 percent by 2070.
Using data from Kyodo News, Statista and Database.earth, Visual Capitalist illustrated Japan's population crisis by charting both the live births and deaths recorded in the country each year.
