There's no clear-cut way to measure a happy life — happiness looks different to different people — but factors like high inflation and poor health can significantly impact whether or not we feel fulfilled and contented.

WalletHub compared the 50 states on 30 key metrics — from share of adult depression to the average number of work hours — to find out where in the US people are happiest.

Top Three Happiest US States

  1. The happiest state overall is Utah, where people enjoy both the best work environment and community in the country.

  2. Hawaii takes the second spot, ranking highest in the US for emotional and physical wellbeing.

  3. In third place is Maryland, with scoring fourth-highest for work environment and fifth-highest for community.

I lived in Utah from about 1973 to 1982 and I was f_____ miserable. But maybe it's changed a little bit since then.

For outdoor adventure and natural beauty opportunities, Utah is hard to beat. The economy is surprisingly strong and there's no shortage of work. If you aren't very active, don't like spending time in the outdoors, dislike conservatives, or have a strong dislike of the LDS church, it's probably not going to be your favorite place to live. Some people could have beach front property in the most amazing setting in the world and still be miserable. Utah is definitely the kind of place where the lifestyle you live and the attitude you bring to the community you live in can make a big difference in the experience you have. May not be everyone's cup of tea, and that's fine.
