As it turns out, specialized medicine is where all the money is. Surgeons, radiologists, cardiologists, dermatologists and the like all show up in the numbers when it comes to average salaries. These positions all require countless years of hard work to even enter the field, and the demand for their services is high. As such, they absolutely dominate the list of top-paid positions.

Credit Karma took the Bureau of Labor Statistics data from May 2021, and focused in on the most-detailed classifications โ€” ignoring broader categories. They then analyzed this mass of data, and ranked each state by its top-paying job category. Keep in mind, this is based on the annual mean salaries, not individual outliers.

What's the best-paying job in your state? Let's dig into the numbers.

Key Findings:

  • Orthopedic surgeons take the top two spots with $381,830 on average in Georgia and $373,230 in North Dakota.

  • Anesthesiologists are the top earners in Vermont, but rank at the bottom of this list with "just" $305,820 in annual mean wage.

  • While Mississippi's Emergency Medicine Physicians end up ranking number 16 with $356,830, the state's average salary is the lowest in the nation at just $42,700.
