It's that time of year: new iPhone season. Apple livestreamed an event on September 7, called "Far Out," that showed us the new iPhone 14, the iPhone 14 Pro, the Apple Watch 8, Apple Watch Ultra and the new AirPods Pro.

Video of the event is below, along with our live blog, in which we followed the event and cataloged the announcements from "Far Out."

Apple Watch Series 8

The new Apple Watch model includes a handful of new features:

  • Always-on display
  • New faces, including Lunar, Modular and Metropolitan
  • Swim-proof, dust-proof and crack-resistant
  • Fall detection, emergency SOS
  • Heart health features including irregular heartbeat notifications and blood oxygen measurement
  • Sleep tracking and mindfulness features
  • Starts at $399 for GPS and $499 for GPS + cellular.

Menstrual Cycle Tracking

Apple also emphasizes its new features for women specifically: secure, private ways to keep track of your menstrual cycle and when you ovulate. It'll be able to measure your temperate, detecting even 0.01-degree changes from your baseline.

Your information will be private, encrypted on your device and only accessible with your password, Touch ID or Face ID, but you'll be able to easily share it with your health provider or whoever else you choose to share it with. Data synced with iCloud is encrypted end-to-end, and even Apple won't be able to access it.

Crash Detection

Apple Watch Series 8 also debuts Apple's new crash detection software. New technology in the watch can detect four types of crashes β€” front impact, side impact, rear-end collision and rollovers β€” and will make it easy for you to call for help.

Low-Power Mode

The Series 8 will be able to give you up to 36 hours of battery life on low-power mode, which minimizes the energy the watch spends on minor functions that won't distract from your watch usage.

Colors

The new Apple Watch faces will be available in Midnight, Starlight, silver and red, and there are a variety of new sports bands and specialized faces, including a Hermès-branded face.

Apple Watch SE

The second generation of the Apple Watch SE will be available in Midnight, Starlight and silver. The function is 20% faster than the prior SE model, and it'll include all the core Apple Watch features as well as fall detection, crash detection, family setup and more. It will also include case covers with matching back cases.

Starting at $249 for GPS and $299 for GPS + cellular.

Apple Watch Ultra

Apple is also debuting a watch specifically for athletes and outdoor adventurers, called the Apple Watch Ultra. Here are some of its features:

  • Brighter display
  • Designed to be used while wearing gloves
  • Multiple-day use on a single charge
  • Dual-frequency GPS
  • Waypoint marking and backtrack to help you avoid getting lost
  • A customizable action button to let you track race segments, find your way or start the dive computer
  • Temperature detectors, both in open air and underwater
  • Three microphones deliberately placed to maximize its ability to pick up your voice, even in high winds and other extreme weather
  • Trail safety features, like a loud siren to make yourself audible from far away
  • Diving-specific features, including the Oceanic Plus app, a dive computer available from your watch, and a bright, optimized display that will be easy to see underwater

The watch also features a new, highly technical face, called Wayfarer, optimized for the trail, with a compass and night mode that turns displays red against a black background for better visibility in the dark.

It'll also come with three new bands: a strong, rugged band called Alpine, the Ocean band for water, and the Trail Loop, which has increased elasticity.

The Oceanic Plus App

The diving app is a fully functional dive computer within Apple Watch Ultra. It can calculate decompression limits, ascent and descent speed, track and sync data from your dives, and make it easy for you to sort and search past dives.

The Apple Watch Ultra will start at $799 for GPS + cellular.

AirPods Pro

We're finally getting a new model of the AirPods pro, featuring new audio technology that includes the ability to create a personalized spatial audio profile from your phone that will translate to your AirPods. You'll be able to control its low-distortion audio driver and custom amplifier to create your ideal audio experience.

The AirPods Pro will now allow up to double the noise cancellation compared to the last Pro model. It will also feature adaptive transparency, which will automatically dial down harsh environmental sounds around you.

The new AirPods Pro also come with more ear tip sizes, more features on the AirPods themselves to allow you to control volume and other features, and will have a longer battery life, with up to 30 hours of total listening time β€” up 6 hours from the last model. And now, precision technology will allow you to find exactly where you left your AirPod case.

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus

Physical features

One of the most noticeable features of the new iPhone is its increased display size, and both models have Apple's newest Super Retina Display. Both models also have a ceramic shield and aerospace-grade aluminum casing.

The new phones will come in five colors: Midnight, Starlight, light blue, light purple and red.

Specs

The iPhone 14 features:

  • The A15 chip
  • A 5-core GPU
  • A 6-core CPU, with two high-performance cores and four efficiency cores

Camera

The iPhone 14 features a 12-megapixel camera, with:

  • Faster apertures
  • Better motion-freezing
  • More vibrant colors
  • A 49% improvement in low-light capture
  • Twice as fast night mode exposure

Its front-facing camera will also be of higher quality than prior iPhone models, with True Depth Capture and a 38% improvement in low-light capture.

The camera will also have better stabilization, with a new Action Mode that you can toggle on for smoother video when you're in motion.

Connectivity

The iPhone 14 now features the eSIM, a digital SIM that replaces a physical SIM card. It's a more secure SIM, and it means you can transfer plans more easily, and store multiple eSIMs on one phone. US models of the iPhone 14 will no longer have the physical SIM tray at all.

Safety

Like the Apple Watch 8 and the new SE watch model, the iPhone 14 will also feature the gyroscope and accelerometer that enable crash detection.

Because there are some areas that cell towers don't reach, the new iPhone will be able to connect to satellites that phones ordinarily can't connect to: you'll be able to see on your phone where satellites are located, and, if you have a clear view of the sky, hold your phone so that it can communicate with a satellite. There's also a quick multiple-choice interface that will allow you to quickly send a message for help to an emergency service provider, either by text or a phone call via relay centers Apple has set up.

You can also share your location via satellite with anyone you want to share it with.

The iPhone 14 starts at $799, and the iPhone 14 Plus starts at $899. They'll be available for pre-order starting September 9.

iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max

The Pro models of the iPhone 14 are built with surgical-grade steel cases and ceramic shield, and will come in space black, silver, gold and deep purple.

The camera has been completely rebuilt to take up less space, and the phone also has a different interface featuring what Apple is calling the Dynamic Island. When you receive an alert, the Dynamic Island will expand β€” to notify you of a phone call, for example, or to let you know it's starting to charge β€” and can also display ongoing background activity in a bar at the top of your phone. You'll be able to control apps in the background without leaving the app you're in.

The phones will come in two sizes with thinner borders to allow for larger displays, and the display will be brighter, with a peak of 2,000 nits.

The iPhone 14 Pro will also feature the new Always On display, with a display that automatically brightens and darkens to optimize itself to your environment.

The A16 chip

Apple is billing its new chip as the fastest-ever in a smartphone, at 40% faster than the competition. It features:

  • 16 billion transistors
  • 5-core GPU with 50% more memory bandwidth
  • 6-core CPU, with two high-performance and high-efficiency cores
  • Efficiency cores that operate using just one-third of the power of the competition
  • A new display engine, with enables the 1 hertz refresh rate and makes for smoother and more dynamic images

Camera

The iPhone 14 Pro's 48MP camera features a new, larger sensor with a different pixel pattern that reduces noise, up to 2x improved low-light capture and more vivid color capture. Its 2x telephoto camera also has better focus, especially for portrait mode.

Its ability to capture higher resolution means better detail and better zoom: you'll be able to re-frame your photos without losing quality in the photo.

The iPhone 14 Pro will start at $999, and the Pro Max at $1,099, with storage options up to 1TB. Both models will be available for pre-order on September 9.
