Mistral announced on Oct. 29 that it was releasing open weights for an improved Mistral Large 4, also called Le Chonk. The company said the model had entered public preview earlier in the month and that it had since improved its coding and defensive cybersecurity capabilities.
There is a distinction between that announcement and the linked checkpoint's availability. The main Hugging Face listing displayed “Upcoming release,” gave an Oct. 31, 2026, ETA and placed the checkpoint under “Planned artifacts.” Mistral's announcement article directed readers to download the weights there, but the listing did not show that the main checkpoint was ready to download. A separate Mistral-authored listing describes an NVFP4 quantized checkpoint and provides instructions for serving it; it does not resolve the status of the main listing.
Coding and cybersecurity claims
Mistral reports that Le Chonk leads on Cognition's private FrontierCode 2.0 coding benchmark with a score of 19.7%. The company also reports a 48% score on the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index, effectively tied with GLM-5.3 while using 47% fewer tokens per task on average.
For defensive cybersecurity, Mistral reports a 51% score on the Artificial Analysis Cyber Index and says it has worked with vendors to evaluate vulnerability reproduction and patching. It reports an average 96.6% refusal rate on malicious cyber requests, but also says it sees “a potential for uplift to conduct real attacks” and is modifying its guardrails. Mistral says access to a specialized variant for advanced cybersecurity work requires vetting and contractual safeguards.
Mistral says organizations can customize Large 4 with Forge. Its description of the open-weight license permits use, modification, fine-tuning and commercialization, but says businesses offering the model commercially as a service must obtain a separate license.
