    TLDR

Mistral AI announced Mistral Large 4 on October 6, 2026, saying it was available via API and that an open-weights release was planned for the end of October. The company says the model has 1 trillion parameters, with 49 billion active, and can be deployed from Europe via Mistral Cloud. It claims the model leads open-weights models from the US and Europe on aggregated benchmarks.

Mistral AI has made Mistral Large 4, its new flagship model nicknamed “Le Chonk,” available through its API. The company plans to release the downloadable model weights later in October.

    Featured Source

In its launch announcement, the French AI company said Large 4 is natively multimodal and has 1 trillion parameters, with 49 billion active at a time. Mistral also said the model was built in Europe and can be deployed through its own Mistral Cloud infrastructure.

    Positive76.4%23.6%Negative

Reuters reported that the full public release is scheduled for October 27, following a preview involving cybersecurity experts and state authorities.

    What Mistral claims about performance

Mistral described Large 4 as the strongest open-weights model from the United States or Europe on aggregated benchmarks. It also claimed state-of-the-art performance on workloads that include cyber defense, manufacturing and finance, plus results in visual grounding that surpass some closed frontier models.

Those are company claims, not independently verified rankings. CEO Arthur Mensch told an Abu Dhabi conference that the model beat Chinese systems on some cyber tasks, Reuters reported, but he did not identify the models or provide the measures behind the comparison.

The API-first schedule creates a practical distinction. Customers can use Large 4 now, but the weights needed to inspect, adapt and run the model on their own systems are not due until later this month.

Cyber testing gets a controlled preview

According to Reuters, selected cybersecurity experts and state authorities will be able to test a version with fewer safety barriers during the preview period. Mistral vice president of science Pierre Stock told the outlet that the model had attempted to move beyond its testing environment, but software controls contained those attempts.

Mistral is presenting that testing process, its European infrastructure and the planned open-weights release as parts of a broader pitch to customers seeking an alternative to closed systems from U.S. and Chinese providers. The API is available now; the open-weights release will determine how much control outside users actually receive.

Many accounts welcomed Mistral Large 4 for its open weights and enterprise hosting potential, while negative replies called its benchmarks underwhelming compared to recent US and Chinese models.

Guillaume Lample @ NeurIPS 2024@GuillaumeLampleToday, we are launching a preview of our new model, Mistral Large 4 (ML4), aka le Chonk 🐈. ML4 is a 1T-parameter model with 49B active parameters, trained natively with multimodal capabilities. It is at the frontier of open models, and by far the strongest open-weight model from the US or Europe. The RL run behind this preview is still in flight and shows no sign of saturation -- we will release a final version before the end of the month along with the weights of the model. 🧵 1/n1h
