Using research by WalletHub, Visual Capitalist mapped the tax burden β€” the percent of an average person's income that is spent on state and local taxes β€” in each US state. The figures are accurate as of March 2024.

The highest tax burden in the country is found in New York, where it totals 12 percent, followed by Hawaii (11.8 percent) and Vermont (11.1 percent).

On the other hand, tax burdens are lowest in Alaska (4.9 percent), New Hampshire (5.6 percent) and Wyoming (5.7 percent). These states' modest tax burdens are owed in part to the fact that their residents don't pay any income tax.
