Amazon blames human employees for an AI coding agent’s mistake

Two minor AWS outages have reportedly occurred as a result of actions by Amazon’s AI tools, according to The Verge. The first outage, in December, was caused by Amazon’s AI coding assistant Kiro, which deleted and recreated the environment it was working on. The second outage, linked to Amazon’s AI chatbot Q Developer, did not impact a customer-facing AWS service. Amazon blames human error for the problems, not the AI tools, and has implemented numerous safeguards following the incidents.

Sam Altman says discussions about AI's energy usage are “unfair”, as it takes “20 years of life and all of the food you eat during that time” to train a human

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, addressed concerns about AI's environmental impact during an event hosted by The Indian Express. He dismissed claims about AI's water usage as 'totally fake' and emphasized the need for a shift towards renewable energy sources. Altman also pointed out that training a human requires significant energy and time, suggesting that AI may already be more energy-efficient than human learning.

US farmers are increasingly rejecting multimillion-dollar offers from data center developers; some estimate ~40K acres are needed globally for new AI projects

US farmers are rejecting multimillion-dollar datacenter bids for their land, emphasizing the cultural and emotional value of their properties over financial gain. The article highlights the conflict between tech companies' need for land to power AI and the farmers' deep-rooted connection to their land. Despite offers that far exceed the land's market value, many farmers refuse to sell, citing personal and historical ties to their land as well as concerns about the environmental impact of datacenters.

A thought experiment imagines the AI-driven “2028 Global Intelligence Crisis”: S&P down, high unemployment, and economy failing, as AI exceeds every expectation

This thought exercise explores a scenario where AI advancements lead to a global intelligence crisis. The narrative details a sequence of events starting with AI-driven layoffs and productivity gains, followed by a negative feedback loop of economic decline as AI replaces human jobs. The crisis accelerates with AI-driven commerce and financial disruptions, leading to a recession concentrated in the upper income brackets. The mortgage market faces risks as income expectations shift, and the government struggles to respond effectively. The social fabric frays as inequality and dissatisfaction grow, highlighting the need for new frameworks to address the changing economic landscape.
