Unless you're working with heavy, droppable tools, or dealing with some orthopedic issues, less really can be more when it comes to shoes. Lems has been making shoes that let feet do their thing since 2011 and their newest shoe (mostly) sticks to that foot-first ethos. The Mesa is a knit mesh upper overlaid with a TPU frame and a grippy rubber sole. The tight-knit mesh is quick-drying and gives a huggy, sock-like feel that feels comfortable the first time you put them on.

Because they're so lightweight and have a minimal 4 mm heel drop, they almost feel like there's nothing there — though the EVA midsole does a good job of shock-absorbing. The all-rubber outsole is equally at home on the trail or walking down the street and will flex like crazy — roll these up in a ball if you like, they're bendy enough to take it. The Mesa's only deviation from Lems' natural-fit attitude is the toebox. As part of their mountain-to-town series, the Mesa features a slightly more narrow fit, making it more like a traditional shoe than their original, wide toe-box styles. As for style, the combination of a retro athletic shoe vibe with an of-the-moment aesthetic makes for one darn fine-looking shoe.
