YOU GO POKÉMON

Contrary to what you might think, neither "Star Wars" nor the Marvel Cinematic Universe are the franchises that have made the most money.

According to this chart made by Reddit user takeasecond using Wikipedia data, when it comes to the highest-grossing media franchises, Pokémon leads by a long stretch with a staggering $93.3 billion. Most of the money of the franchise is made from — no surprise here — merchandising, while a hefty percentage of its revenues come from video games and card games.

It's clear from the chart that merchandising constitutes the most significant part of the revenues for most franchises listed here. Franchises like Hello Kitty, Winnie the Pooh and "Star Wars" all follow this trend, while exceptions like the Marvel Cinematic Universe has instead depended on box office sales as its primary revenue source.
