Not everything has to have flash and glitz. In an age of excess, there's something to be said for subtle competence. Like this watch from Filson. Their Field watch is inspired by the military issue watches GIs wore in WWII and beyond. A large face and big numbers tell you the time. A leather strap and metal buckle secure it to your wrist. Since time keeping and staying put are the two things you need a watch to do, this delivers the goods.

The stainless case is water resistant up to a hundred meters and the watch crystal (the part that protects the face) is made from sapphire crystal, a super hard synthetic sapphire that's pretty much impervious to scratches. (Except diamonds. Avoid rubbing your ice against your timepiece and you should be golden.) It's simple, it's durable and it's just there to do its job. We could all take a lesson.
