The map mavens over on Reddit's Data Is Beautiful subreddit have been having a field day lately comparing cities' official subway maps with the actual geography they represent. Turns out most cities aren't as geometrically tidy as their transportation departments want you to think!

The trend of comparing metro maps to the geographic reality they represent got started with this GIF of Berlin.

The New York map confirms what most New Yorkers already know: Manhattan is way overrated:

Some of the maps are simple but still weirdly entrancing, like Vancouver and Montreal.

And others, like Warsaw and Austin, demonstrate that some public transportation map designers aren't even trying to be accurate.
