It's Football Season So We Let The Editors From Sports Illustrated Run The Page
SPORTS ILLUSTRATED + DIGG

The good folks at Digg asked me to write an editor's letter introducing this here takeover of their homepage. They helpfully appended this editor's letter written by Popular Mechanics editor Andrew Moseman just two weeks ago, which humbly proclaimed to be the second-best ever penned after the one authored in 1987 by Pop Mechanics EIC Joe Oldham famously introducing the Cars of Miami Vice.

I will make no such lofty claim and only point out that an anthology of editor's letters has yet to be published and were one to be, it might be titled "World's Tallest Midget: A Collection of the World's Greatest Editor's Letters." Editors, unless you're David Remnick, become editors so that they can be ruthlessly judgemental of the writing, photography and filmmaking of others while largely avoiding those acts themselves.

But the purpose behind SI's takeover of the Digg page is a noble one: to present the best of Sports Illustrated in all its acclaimed forms — words, photos and video. These collected works ARE worthy of an anthology, which is how you can view this takeover. Each piece of content — divided neatly as one-third longform text, one-third video and one-third outside work (many from competitors) that we just really like — is intended to evoke the full emotional range of the sports experience. You will be fascinated; You will be heartbroken; You will be enraged . You will be lifted

The entire spectrum of sports storytelling is captured in this collaboration and I'd argue sports storytelling has never been more engaging or sublime. We hope you Digg it. (Too easy, I know). Enjoy.
