TOO MUCH

The rent may be too damn high, but so is the cost of buying a place — particularly in California.  HSH put together a map showing the salary you need to earn in 27 different metro areas around the country in order to purchase a home. If you have dreams of living in San Francisco,

It's worth noting that most of these figures are based on the median home price for entire metropolitan areas — so, for instance, while the New York area figure is based on a median home price of $395,400, you can be sure that if you're trying to buy a place in Manhattan you'll need to be making a heck of a lot more than that $86,000 number.
