Nine Killer Basslines That'll Make You Forget About The Rest Of The Song
Basslines often fade into the background, but sometimes they're so good that they take over everything.

With few exceptions, a good song must have a solid bassline. It usually isn't the star of the show, but getting rid of it causes the song to sound thin and incoherent. However, the bass does get to stand out in a handful of killer tracks, so we want to give 'em their due.

A now-deleted Redditor wanted a list of the very best basslines, and the AskReddit crowd had some strong opinions on bass.

More than 5,000 responses have poured into this thread already, so we rounded up the best ones, and paired them with their relevant YouTube embed. You're welcome.

Now this is a ding-dang theme song

Bonus: Herbie Hancock's 'Chameleon' didn't get enough love on Reddit, but it's incredible

I was gonna say, if Rio wasn't on this list I was going to burn the whole thing down. Not sure how that Brit John Taylor got so funky, but dayum!

The O'jays' For the Love of Money. Pretty much all of the first stranglers album, but especially Princess of the Streets. Lots of Simon Gallup stuff with The Cure, but especially Fascination Street.

Maybe that Barney opening, but best of all time? Go no further than Stevie Wonder. I like “I wish” for the bass but he’s got a few masterpieces to chose from.
