Hidden, unexpected fees are one thing to consider before buying a home, but the extra costs don't stop once you've been handed the keys. In addition to mortgage repayments, things like tax, home insurance and homeowner association (HOA) fees can add hundreds or even thousands of dollars to your monthly bills.

To find out where in the US is home to the most disproportionate property fees, CashNetUSA looked at Zillow's "for sale" listings and worked out the estimated monthly payments for HOA properties in 1,890 of the country's neighborhoods. The neighborhoods were then ranked based on which had the highest and lowest monthly payments dedicated to property tax, home insurance and HOA fees as a percentage of total repayments.

The highest relative property fees relative are found in Prospect Lefferts Gardens in Brooklyn, New York, where they account for 68.85 percent of total homeownership costs.

The US neighborhood with the least excessive property fees, on the other hand, is DC Ranch in Scottsdale, Arizona (13.16 percent).

Also in Brooklyn, New York, Clinton Hill has the lowest relative property fees (16.64 percent), while Westlake is home to the highest costs of any California neighborhood (37.67 percent).
